Abstract:
The study aimed to investigate the gap effect on the salience of search target and performance in visual search tasks considering two display polarity modes and two angle combination modes. In this study, a three-factor within-subjects design experiment was conducted (11 gap value × 2 polarity × 2 angle combination). 18 subjects participated in this study and completed a series of visual search tasks under different combinations of gap values, display polarity modes and angle combination modes. The target detection probability and reaction time were measured. The results indicated that the main effects and interaction of gap value and angle combination on target salience were significant while the main effects of gap value and polarity on reaction time were significant. Gap effect showed significant influences on target salience and search performance.
